Is DKNY A Good Brand? – A Look Into A Famous Brand
Respect is earned – this is true not just for social cues but also for the fashion industry. A brand cannot just put up a sign, mark up their prices, and advertise themselves as a high-end or even luxury brand. With this, we often ask, is DKNY a good brand? We might have seen it or loved their product but has hesitations in buying one.
DKNY has proved their products to be of good quality, high-end materials – so, it is still a good brand. But currently, the company is no longer blessed with luxury from LVMH. So, the brand now needs more mass-market appeal. It must now meet standards under a mass-market company, like the G-III Apparel Group, which houses brands like Jones New York, Vince Camuto, and Ellen Tracy.
How did DKNY Start?
Founded in 1984, DKNY is a New York City-based fashion brand focusing on fashion goods. Donna Karan, its founder, worked for a decade at Anne Klein as its head designer. After that, with her late husband, Karan was given the opportunity to start their clothing line by Anne Klein's owner, Takihyo LLC.
Then, in 1996, DKNY became a publicly-traded venture. It was bought by the French fashion giant LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) in 2001. Then, in 2015, Donna Karan left as the chief designer to focus on her Urban Zen Foundation philanthropy and Urban Zen brand. A year later, Donna Karan International was subsequently sold again by LVMH to the G-III Apparel Group for $650 million. Based in New York City, G-III manufactures and distributes clothing and accessories with their licensed brands, owned brands, and private label brands.
How are High-end Designer Clothes Produced?
Luxurious brand prices have always been high. But over time, prices have risen at rates that exceed general inflation levels. Luxury designers tend to work with high-quality materials than your average brand would. And this has an impact on how their price is such. On top of that, the rise in raw material costs can lead to supply shortages or demand increases. These factors ultimately affect the final prices faced by consumers. Many high-end brands like Hermes or Louis Vuitton also have bulk with their products manufactured in European countries. This means that the overall manufacturing costs will be greater than if the same process was in other places like Asia. There, many different brands take advantage of some of the cheapest production costs in the world.
Now, knowing how luxurious brands are made and the company's origin, DKNY is a good brand. It might not have the same luxury statement of being under LVMH, but a good bag is still a good deal. It is still up to you whether you want a legit luxury, or just rooting for a good brand. But we say, that you can’t go wrong with products that were once under LVMH, the top fashion company today. Go out now, shop, and try it yourself!
